Julie A. Ahrens was appointed the new director of copyright and fair use at Stanford Law School’s Center for Internet and Society (CIS) in June, taking over the reins of the Fair Use Project from Tony Falzone, who is now the deputy general counsel at Pinterest, Inc. Launched in 2006, the Fair Use Project is the only organization in the country dedicated specifically to providing free and comprehensive legal representation to content creators who face copyright claims. Ahrens, who has been with the Fair Use Project at CIS since 2007, represents writers, filmmakers, musicians, and others who rely on fair use in creating their art, documentaries, scholarship, critiques, or commentaries. As the director, she will continue litigating copyright cases across the country and counseling clients to minimize legal risk and secure their rights to create and distribute their work. Before joining Stanford, Ahrens was a litigation attorney in the San Francisco office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP, where she served as lead attorney defending the musician and electronic composer, BT, in a copyright infringement case in the Southern District of New York. Ahrens received her JD from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in 2002.
