The Daily Journal’s “Top 100 California Lawyers” for 2009 included three members of the Stanford Law School faculty: Jeffrey L. Fisher, associate professor of law and co-director of the Supreme Court Litigation Clinic; Mark A. Lemley (BA ’88), William H. Neukom Professor of Law; and Michael Romano ’03, lecturer in law and supervising attorney for Stanford Law’s Criminal Defense Clinic.

Noting that the Stanford Supreme Court Litigation Clinic remains one of the most prolific Supreme Court practices in the country, the Daily Journal recognized Fisher as one of the nation’s leading Supreme Court advocates and the clinic as prompting “the most significant developments in case law in the United States.” Fisher’s  victory last year in People v. Melendez-Diaz was referred to as a “watershed case” that will require prosecutors nationwide to rethink their tactics in presenting forensic evidence.

The Daily Journal praised Lemley for spearheading the launch of the Stanford IP Litigation Clearinghouse, publishing multiple academic papers, remaining active in several court cases, and founding a new law firm, Durie Tangri LLP. Romano and the students at the Stanford Law Criminal Defense Clinic were recognized for “taking aim at the most maligned part of California’s ‘three strikes law’—that virtually no offense is too small to garner a life sentence.” Founded in 2006, the clinic represents defendants charged under the three strikes law with minor, non-violent offenses. The clinic has, to date, won reversals of ten life sentences for its clients.
