Law Enforcement And The Mentally Ill

Stanford Law Professor Joan Petersilia was interviewed on KCBS radio about budget cuts to social services and recent tragedies involving police and people with mental health problems:

“In some ways we have really a perfect storm that has created one of the most challenging issues…If you talk to line law enforcement officers, the treatment of the mentally ill in communities today is certainly one of the most difficult challenges they face. Estimates suggest that about 10 percent of all interactions that law enforcement have with community members have to do with a person with mental illness.”
